Function Notation

We write f (x) to mean the function whose input is x.

y-intercept

The y-intercept of a line is the point at which the line
crosses the y axis.

X-intercept

The x-intercept of a line is the point at which the line
crosses the x axis.

Aboslute Value Function


Absolute value functions are explored, using an applet, by comparing the graphs of f(x) and
 h(x) = |f(x)|.

Ex: -3 = 3
        3= 3

Parallel Lines

two lines in the same plane that do NOT intersect ; they always have the same slope

Perpendicular Lines

two lines that intersect at a right angle ,their slopes are negative reciprocals

Range

The range is the set of all possible output values (usually y), which result from using the function formula.
