average rate of change

The change in the value of a quantity divided by the elapsed time.

zero of a function

parent function

Functions which include or are derived from these functions are called related functions.

Independent variable

the independent variable is said to cause an apparent change in, or affect the dependent variable

Dependent Variable

A dependent variable is a variable dependent on another variable

Function Notation

We write f (x) to mean the function whose input is x.

y-intercept

The y-intercept of a line is the point at which the line
crosses the y axis.

X-intercept

The x-intercept of a line is the point at which the line
crosses the x axis.

Aboslute Value Function

Absolute value functions are explored, using an applet, by comparing the graphs of f(x) and
 h(x) = |f(x)|.

Ex: -3 = 3
        3= 3

Parallel Lines

two lines in the same plane that do NOT intersect ; they always have the same slope

Perpendicular Lines

two lines that intersect at a right angle ,their slopes are negative reciprocals

Range

The range is the set of all possible output values (usually y), which result from using the function formula.

Function

A function is a set of mathematical operations performed on one or more inputs (variables) that results in an output

Absolute Value

The absolute value of a number is its distance from 0 on a number line

Ex: y = [x]

Domain

The domain of a function is the set of all possible input values (usually x), which allows the function formula to work

Slope Intercept Form

A linear equation in the form y = mx + b. Where x and y are the variables and m and b are constants.

Slope

In mathematics, slope descripes the steepness, incline or grade of a line. A higher slope indicates a steeper incline. If you have two points on a line represented on a graph, the slope of that line equals

Ex: (y2 - y1)
    __________
      (x2 - x1)
